Acoustic floors & Underfloor heating

Noise Reducing Acoustic Flooring and Underfloor Heating

Reducing Noise – Acoustic Systems
Special underlay, boards and adhesives are available to reduce footfall and noise transmission with British Standard or similar rated decibel reduction. These are easier to install under engineered hardwood flooring which is simply floated over the top of acoustic underlay such as Timbermate Excel or Redupax boards.
Excel can be installed underneath secret nailed solid hardwood flooring to reduce footfall but there will some transmission through the nail to the subfloor below.
Elastic polyurethane adhesives such as Sika T52 or Rapid Bond allow solids to be bonded to the subfloor without nail fixing, produce decibel reduction and can be incorporated with a special underlay system to further reduce noise transmission.
Underfloor Heating
Most engineered boards are suitable over under floor heating except for beech which is less stable than other hardwoods. Many manufacturers advise fully bonding the boards to the subfloor rather than installing as a floating system. Special requirements apply.
There is little information from manufacturers of solid hardwood flooring , many of them avoiding the problem. However there is a published article from the Hardwood Manufacturers Association.
Main points:
  1. Use narrower boards, strip rather than plank.
  2. Install over ply.
  3. Heating must be running before delivery of flooring.
  4. Acclimatise the flooring fully beforehand , may require racking out the flooring .
  5. Do not fully turn off the system for long periods.
  6. British Standard 8201 suggests a timber moisture content of 6 -8%.

Parquet Flooring

If you are looking for something different when it comes to a wooden floor we can offer solid wood parquet flooring. This floor is composed of rectangular blocks of wood arranged in a different patterns: brick, squares, basket and many more. The most popular is herringbone and in combination with various floor finishes it can create a stylish but still traditional twist on typical wood flooring.

For those that want something different when it comes to a wooden floor, we can provide beautifully designed Parquet flooring in Hertfordshire and London.

The word “Parquet” is a derivative of the word “parc” from French meaning “a small enclosed space”. One of the first parquet floors was a square patterned design which was introduced to the palace of Versailles in 1684. The parquet flooring was introduced to replace the marble floor which had to be washed constantly and was causing the floor joists below to rot. Parquet floors became very popular after they were noted in important buildings such as Versailles and the Grand Trianon and people began replacing their cold stone floors with warmer wood alternatives.

Parquet flooring is formed by fitting shapes in a regular geometric fashion. Historically squares, triangles and diamonds were used but sometimes even star shapes were added for more decoration. Parquet designs can also be used on furniture such as table tops because they provide a creative way of adding pattern to a wooden surface. The most popular parquet design is the herringbone pattern which uses rectangular blocks laid at perpendicular angles.

Here at Wood You Floor we provide both solid wood and engineered wood flooring. We also have a choice of beautiful stains so you can customise your floor to the colour that would best suit your home. Our flooring is made of beautiful, responsibly sourced European oak. The oak we use is of premium quality and is extremely durable. Parquet floors provide a stylish twist on standard wooden flooring: their eye-catching design makes them perfect for use in halls and foyers, where first impressions count. Wood floor installation

We recommend that a professional flooring installer is contracted

  1. Under cut the bottom of door frames, wardrobes etc to allow for the floor boards to fit under it.
  2. Always leave a full 15mm expansion gap around the edges.
  3. Open 4-5 packs and ‘shuffle’ the boards to ensure an even distribution of the colour and character.
  4. The industry standard of 5% minimum waste shall apply for defects and cutting.
  5. You must use a professionally formulated specialist wood adhesive that is flexible and causes no swelling of the wood.
  6. Always keep glue off the surface area of the boards.
  7. Sometimes floor boards can be fixed directly onto joists or battens. This is done by nailing. The joists and battens should be sound rigid and level with moisture content no greater than 12-14% at the time of fixing the solid floor.
  8. Finishing off- the last board of the first row should be fitted using a puller bar ensuring 15mm expansion gap at the end. All perimeter gaps should be covered with skirting boards or cover strips at thresholds.

Pre installation

The flooring can be laid on most types of substrate flooring which is clean, dry and level, e.g. sand and cement screed, timber flooring boards, chipboards, ply etc. Professional flooring contractor will check the site condition prior the installation. It is vital to check the moisture content of the concrete/screed. Then screed must be levelled to a tolerance of no more than a 3mm gap.
If installing a new timber flooring on existing floor boards make sure that old floorboards are secure and then its recommended you lay the new flooring opposite direction to a existing floor to stabilise any subsequent movement within either timber.

Engineered wood flooring

engineered wood flooring

Wood you floor provide engineered wood flooring in London which is one of the most popular flooring types today.

Engineered wood flooring is also called semi-solid due to their unique construction: top layer of oak and plywood. Engineered wooden flooring goes through a specific manufacturing process which creates its durability, variety and attractive grain markings.

Our engineered wood flooring in London is made of two or more layers of wood. The top layer, called the lamella is the finished wood and this is the surface that is visible so uses the highest quality timber. The core layers are often made of ply wood or thinner wood and these are glued together to make a sandwich effect. Each layer of wood is laid perpendicular to the other which results in an extremely robust and enduring product. The benefits of engineered flooring are that they are normally cheaper than solid wood floor and can withstand many years of pressure and traffic without showing signs of deterioration.

Our engineered wood flooring is the perfect addition to your home: wooden floors look smart and their neutral tones will compliment any style of room. Engineered wood floors in particular are extremely durable and if properly maintained can last a lifetime. They are also highly practical as they are easily cleaned and attract less dust than carpets. We will happy supply and fit engineered wooden flooring in London for homes and commercial properties
